In this day and age when everything is going digital, the field of art is no exception. Digital art is the new phenomenon that continues to grow in popularity thanks to the advancement of computers and technology. Speaking by definition, digital art refers to artistic practices that make use of digital technology.
Digital art has had such an impact on the artistic field that it began replacing tradition works of art. Today, art is fast being described by terms such as net art, installation art and virtual reality. These fields seem to be swiftly replacing traditional forms of art like drawing, painting and sculpture.
Digital artists have the full right to be called artists. Though using the digital form to produce artistic works, they still use their creative energies and ideas to come up with interesting pieces of work. There are a number of digital artists out there who use the digital tools to satiate their artistic desires. A few of the digital artists worth mentioning are:
Maurice Benayoun - Popular by the moniker of MoBen, Maurice Benayoun is a native of Mascara, Algeria. Born on March 29, 1957, he is arguably the best when one talks of digital media artists. He uses various digital media like video, virtual reality as well as wireless technology and art installations in most of his works. Over the years, he has won many awards in the field of digital art of which some of the notable ones are- SACD award, Qwartz, Best Multimedia project, France, Golden Nica, Austria among others. Some of his most noteworthy works are Big Questions, Is the Devil Curved, Labylogue, NeOrizon and Still Moving.
Carlos Amorales - another digital artists, this is another name worth mentioning. Carlos Amorales is a Mexican artist who was born in the city of Mexico in 1970. The works of Carlos Amorales is characterised by the flat, bold forms that form a feature of most of his works. He uses many kinds of media which includes the digital media like video etc and traditional form of art media like painting, sculpture etc.
Cory Arcangel - One of the best digital artists, Corn Arcangel is a Brooklyn based digital artist who was born in 1978. His works explore the relationship between technology and culture. One of his most noteworthy works is Nintendo game cartridge hacks as well as rehash of the obsolete computers of the 70's and 80's. Apart from being a digital artist, he is also a gifted musician. His most recent record is "The Bruce Springsteen".
Roy Ascott - He is another digital or new media artist who works with telematics and is the President of Collegium. Born in England, Roy skilfully uses the medium of computer and electronic art to come up with award-winning works.
These are just a few of the well-known digital artists. Digital art is an exciting new field of art that utilizes new technologies as well as older traditional forms of art. As technology progresses, one should expect to see integration of both old and new fields of art to find a harmonic mix of one another.
